50 job interview questions and how to answer them
Interviews vary by role, but many questions repeat because employers need to understand motivation, experience, communication and problem-solving. Preparation is not about memorising scripts; it is about having evidence ready.
Use this guide as a map and adapt every answer to the job description, company and your real experience.
How to prepare before the interview
Read the job description and highlight responsibilities, tools, competencies and requirements. Match each important point with evidence from your experience.
Prepare short answers for predictable questions and deeper examples for behavioural questions. Practise aloud so you can hear when an answer is too long or vague.
Questions about you and your motivation
Common questions include tell me about yourself, your strengths, a weakness you are improving and why you want the role.
Connect your past, current focus and next step. Do not recite your whole CV; select the details that are most relevant.
Questions about experience and achievements
Expect questions about an achievement, difficult project, mistake or challenging decision. Explain your own actions, not only the team's context.
Use tangible outcomes such as revenue, time saved, quality, fewer errors, customer outcomes or faster delivery.
Questions about the company and role
Why do you want to work here and why should we hire you test whether you understand the opportunity.
Research the product, customers, market and role, then connect the employer's needs with capabilities you can prove.
Behavioural questions and STAR
Conflict, pressure, shifting priorities and leadership questions look for evidence from past behaviour.
Use STAR: Situation, Task, Action and Result. Keep context short and spend most of your answer on your decisions and results.
Questions at the end
Do not automatically say you have no questions. Ask about priorities, success criteria, team challenges and next steps.
Your questions help you evaluate the role too. Interviews should provide useful information in both directions.
